Avalon Emerson & the Charm – Jupiter and Mars

Avalon Emerson & the Charm share “Jupiter and Mars,” the second single from Written into Changes, out 20 March via Dead Oceans. Written and produced with Rostam Batmanglij, the track twinkles with synths and guitars, lighter and airier than November’s hard-hitting “Eden”.

Emerson describes it as “the feeling of drinking a cold beer in the shadow of a big wave. Sometimes a salty end is inevitable, but it doesn’t make a beach day any less warm and lovely.” The lyrics handle heartbreak with cosmic scope: “And in a light-year or two down the line / When it all collapses on itself, folding time / And our dust finds each other in the thin / I’ll understand if you leave me again.”

“I loved chasing this song with Rostam almost as much as our two little dogs loved chasing each other around the studio,” Emerson says.

Written into Changes marks a shift from the “soft and bedroomy” sound of 2023’s & the Charm. “Playing them on a big kind of festival stage was a learning experience,” Emerson explains. “Coming back into the studio for a second round, it was important to think about the dynamics and energy of what we were making and how they might be performed in the future.” The result is band-driven but groove-heavy and dance-adjacent.

Co-produced with longtime collaborator Nathan Jenkins (Bullion) and Rostam Batmanglij, the album was recorded in Braintree, England during winter into spring 2024, with Rostam’s tracks cut in Los Angeles and synth touches added at Rosen Sound in Glendale. The collaborative entity includes Keivon Mehdi Hobeheidar on bass and cello, multi-instrumentalist Jay Flew, and Emerson’s wife Hunter Lombard on guitar.

The album chronicles five years of constant travel—multinational DJing and moves from Berlin to Los Angeles to New York. Emerson describes it as not just accepting change, but embracing it with a full wingspan.
